Abstract

The SYPR project was established in 1997 to examine tropical deforestation and land change in the southern Yucatán (SY) region in which the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve is centered. From its inception, the project had its goal to create an understanding of land dynamics in the SY consistent with the GLP’s science plan. Specific research has ranged from women’s use of NGO green initiatives to soil nutrient dynamics under repeated cultivation to novel land classifications and monitoring to agent-based modeling.
