2010
-
2010 International Conference on Integrative Landscape Modelling
Montpellier, France, February 3-5.
The landscape results from complex interactions between biophysical and ecological processes (the ‘environment’ sub-system) and human activities (the ‘human’ sub-system). As such, the study of landscapes implies researches in many different disciplines like soil sciences, hydrology, agronomy, ecology, social sciences, economy…
The 2010 international conference on integrative landscape modelling will gather leading scientists in each of the main disciplines dealing with ecosystems and landscape simulation and management, complex dynamic modelling and assessment of vulnerability, resilience and adaptation of agro- and eco-systems under human influence.

- Global Change and the World’s Mountains
Perth, UK, September 26-30.
MRI and the Centre for Mountain Studies at Perth College UHI are planning a conference on Global Change and the World's Mountains, as a follow-up to the 2005 Open Science Conference 'Global Change in Mountain Regions'. The aims of the conference are to:
- present, evaluate and synthesise progress in our understanding of global change in relation to mountain regions since 2005
- evaluate progress with regard to the implementation and impacts of the GLOCHAMORE Research Strategy, especially in mountain biosphere reserves
- work proactively on a global agenda for research and action relating to global change and mountain regions, taking into consideration global assessment and policy processes such as those relating to the IPCC, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity.

- Towards a New Knowledge for Scale Sensitive Governance of Complex Systems
Wageningen, the Netherlands, November 10-12.
Due date for abstract submission: May 31, 2010.
Policies have many impacts on environmental and human processes at different spatial and temporal scales. Climate change, biodiversity, energy consumption, water resource management, and food security are a few of the many examples illustrating the complex multi-scale interactions within and between environmental and human processes. This observation fits well within a long history of disappointments in policy and management related to our environment and indicates that scale sensitive governance approaches are required. Wageningen University and Research (UR) invites participants of the conference to discuss integrative concepts, methodologies, and case studies related to scaling and governance issues in complex systems. Anticipated outcomes of the conference include an international research agenda and recommendations for scale-sensitive governance approaches. On Wednesday November 10, 2010 a pre-conference will be held for PhD students. The conference is organized by Wageningen UR Centre as part of the Scaling & Governance Investment Program.

- Ester Boserup Conference 2010 - A centennial tribute
Vienna, Austria, November 15-17.
Ester Boserup was one of the pioneers of an integrated theoretical approach to questions of development and sustainability. 2010 marks the centennial of her birth. The international Boserup conference Long-term trajectories in population, gender relations, land use, and the environment wishes to pay tribute to her work and to her intellectual heritage.

- Societal Adaptability for Land-use Change in Tropical Rain Forests in Borneo. The overall aim of this workshop series is progress towards sustainable ecosystem services management through informed societal adaptations to land-use change. The workshop series will: a) present the most accurate spatial data on the forest cover of Borneo; b) predict a future trend of the forest cover of Borneo and C) suggest societal adaptations. The first workshop will be held December 13 - 14, 2007, Kyoto University, Japan.
